| MIXED REACTION TO TOWNHILL HAWKER DICING WITH DEATH |
A hawker selling refreshments on Townhill has sparked mixed reactions, with some warning it is an accident waiting to happen due to roadside traffic risks and limited visibility on the N3. The post on Facebook points out the unlawful action is being overlooked by KZN traffic authorities as comments laud the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience in difficult economic conditions, while others warn the behaviour is courting an avoidable tragedy. |
| ROBERTS ROAD BRIDGE PROJECT LOOKS BEYOND MUNICIPAL FAILURES |
Work is underway to restore the neglected Roberts Road bridge with business support from Talisman and Hall's Retail. KPCA Group is forging ahead with its Action Team bridge rehabilitation at Robert’s Road Bridge, looking beyond short-term disruptions such as the municipal strike that is affecting Pietermaritzburg. With sponsors Halls Retail and Talisman PMB, the group is driving its second major bridge renovation after the 2023 Chief Albert Luthuli Bridge project. The initiative combines concrete cleaning, rail grinding and vegetation clearance, aiming to improve safety, reduce crime hotspots and reconnect surrounding communities. Organisers say the effort reflects a longer-term commitment to urban renewal and are calling for public support ahead of a Mandela Day Paint-A-Thon in 2026. | CALL TO HELP SENIOR CITIZENS CROSS THE DIGITAL DIVIDE |
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed today, calls for action beyond adressing physical harm by focusing on dignity, access, and inclusion. As services move online, many older people lose independence due to digital barriers such as complex apps, poor accessibility, and declining vision or dexterity. Businesses and banks are urged to design elder-friendly systems, offer in-person alternatives, and provide patient support. Policy makers and communities must prioritise inclusion, ensuring older citizens remain active participants rather than being excluded from services they helped build and sustain throughout their lives.

1974: Minister of Defence P W Botha announced that the South African police would be replaced by the SANDF on the northern borders of South West Africa (now Namibia) to counter SWAPO.
Elsewhere, in 1844, Charles Goodyear patented vulcanisation, the basic concept of strengthening rubber by adding sulfur or similar materials.
Spare a thought for senior citizens today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It’s also Global Wind Day.

JULY FUEL-RELIEF ON THE CARDS AS OIL SLIPS, RAND RISES South African motorists could see fuel prices fall again in July despite the full restoration of the temporary fuel levy relief introduced in June. Mid-month data points to lower international oil prices and a stronger rand supporting over-recoveries in fuel pricing. Current estimates suggest petrol could decline by around 20c to 30c per litre, while diesel may decrease by 40c to 60c per litre, although final adjustments will depend on market movements during the remainder of June.
The anticipated reductions would help offset the return of the fuel levy, offering some relief to consumers and businesses facing ongoing transport and living-cost pressures. (SOURCE: News24)

UBER RICH LOADING UP ON WESTERN CAPE PROPERTY South Africa’s ultra-rich more than doubled residential and commercial property acquisitions in the 12 months to September 2025, Standard Bank Group says. The average value of properties purchased rose 38%, driven largely by surging Western Cape prices. Clients typically hold at least $50 million (about R800 million) in investable assets, with SA home to over 41 000 individuals above $1 million in wealth. Industrial assets made up nearly two-thirds of commercial purchases, followed by retail and offices. Demand stayed strong despite shifting interest rates and geopolitical shocks. Investors cite long-term wealth preservation, diversification, and rental income as key drivers of activity growth. (SOURCE: Bloomberg)

COURT VOIDS FLAWED R49 BILLION STUDENT AID TENDER A high court has declared the National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s (NSFAS) R49 billion student allowance payment tender unlawful, ruling that the procurement process was flawed. However, the court found that the fintech companies awarded the contracts were not guilty of wrongdoing and ordered that they be compensated for services already rendered. The judgment leaves NSFAS potentially liable for substantial claims arising from the invalidated contracts. The ruling is the latest development in ongoing governance challenges at the student funding body, which supports millions of students and administers billions of Rand in financial assistance annually. Court papers reportedly allege that substantial funds were diverted from company accounts over several years, contributing to losses suffered by investors and franchisees. The bookkeeper denies wrongdoing and is expected to contest the claims. The case forms part of ongoing efforts by liquidators to recover assets and trace missing funds following the dramatic downfall of what was once a rapidly expanding early childhood education franchise. PLUMMETING WILD CHEETAH NUMBERS RING ALARM BELLS South Africa’s wild cheetah population is far smaller than previously believed, with new research estimating that only 119 adult animals remain in free-ranging populations. Conservationists say earlier estimates significantly overstated numbers, masking the species’ vulnerability. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, poaching and fragmented populations continue to threaten the survival of Africa’s fastest land animal. The findings have prompted renewed calls for stronger conservation measures, improved habitat connectivity and greater protection of critical ecosystems. Researchers warn that without coordinated intervention, the already fragile population could decline further, placing the long-term future of wild cheetahs in South Africa at risk. (SOURCE: News24)

The measures include strengthened diplomatic engagement, market intelligence, risk monitoring and support for affected investors. Authorities say maintaining stable trade and investment relations is vital for regional growth, while encouraging dialogue to address tensions and protect legitimate business interests. EL NIÑO'S EARLY ARRIVAL SPARKS DISRUPTIVE WEATHER THREAT Weather authorities have officially declared the arrival of an El Niño season, warning that it could rank among the strongest on record. Forecasts indicate a high likelihood of intense heat, prolonged drought and increased flooding in vulnerable regions over the coming months. The climate pattern, driven by unusually warm Pacific Ocean temperatures, is expected to amplify global warming effects and disrupt normal weather systems. Scientists also warn of significant impacts on marine ecosystems, including heatwaves, harmful algal blooms and threats to fisheries. Communities are urged to prepare for extreme weather conditions and heightened environmental risks as El Niño strengthens. (SOURCE: NBC)

OIL SLUMPS ON INTERIM US-IRAN DEAL Oil fell after US and Iran agreed to an interim deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, easing supply fears that had driven volatility in global energy markets. Brent crude dropped nearly 5 percent toward $83 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate hovered near $80, reflecting easing risk premiums. Traders remain cautious, citing unclear details of the agreement, potential mines in the waterway, and high insurance costs for shipping. European gas prices fell, while gold and copper gained as the US dollar weakened and risk sentiment improved across markets. Analysts say full recovery of flows may take months ahead however.
